That\u2019s what we\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n<p>How big is Wikipedia Globally?<\/p>\n<p>>>1MM English<br \/>\n>>400,000 German<br \/>\n>>200,000 French, Polish, Japanese, Dutch<br \/>\n>>42 languages >> 10,000<br \/>\n>>98 languages> 1,000<\/p>\n<p>How popular?<br \/>\nTop 20 web site (Alexa)<br \/>\nBroader reach than<br \/>\nNYT<br \/>\nLAT<br \/>\nWSJ<br \/>\nMSNBC.COM<br \/>\nChicago Tribune<br \/>\n~5.0 Billion page views monthly<br \/>\n200 servers<\/p>\n<p>Compared about.com (flat line) versus Wikipedia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Accuracy&#8221; Incident caused massive traffic increase<\/p>\n<p>Basic Ideas:<br \/>\nBroadcast Media leads to broadcast politics<br \/>\nSoundbites (samples)<br \/>\nStirring images<br \/>\nParticipatory media<br \/>\nLeads to participatory politics<\/p>\n<p>Graph of participation in elections (dropping)<\/p>\n<p>Wikis for campaigns<br \/>\n-The Dean campaign showed the effectiveness of Internet organizing<br \/>\n-But all that people did was organize, not formulate policy or shape the arguments<br \/>\n-Dean fell apart because of other reasons<\/p>\n<p>Wikis for campaigns<br \/>\n&#8211; Wikipedia works because it is organized around a few central principles: NPOV and WP:NT central among them<br \/>\n&#8211; Other wikis work when they have a central organizing concept<br \/>\n&#8211; A campaign wiki fits the requirements for a successful wiki<\/p>\n<p>Open and Closed<br \/>\n&#8211; Wikis are general perceived as being wide open and in a sense of course they are<br \/>\n&#8211; But real world successful wikis always limit participation to people who can agree with the broad organizing principle<\/p>\n<p>What will not Work<br \/>\n&#8211; Tight, top down hierarchical control will lead to a wiki that might as well be a static html campaign site, unable to respond quickly with the time<br \/>\n&#8211; Anarchy will lead to trolling and vandalism from the other side<\/p>\n<p>Who controls?<br \/>\n&#8211; On the official campaign website? Then candidate can be blamed for any thing some might say so campaign would need top down control -> failure<br \/>\n&#8211; Completely outside the campaign<\/p>\n<p>What will work?<\/p>\n<p>Broad, welcoming, inviting participation<\/p>\n<p>Question: How do you get past the Echo chamber?<br \/>\n\u201cI think those things are changing. I really don\u2019t know. Senate campaign in Utah is using Wiki.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Practical Uses<br \/>\n&#8211; Organizing meetups \u2013 just like meetup.com except more fluid and flexible<br \/>\n&#8211; Authoring whitepapers on issues from the point of view of the community supporting the candidate (wikis drive people to the middle, away from extremism)<br \/>\n&#8211; Responding quickly with intelligent answers to developing events<\/p>\n<p>Local meetups<br \/>\n&#8211; Local meetups planned for around the world<br \/>\n&#8211; First one is Chicago July 29<br \/>\nChicago, Boston, San Francisco, Delhi, Hong Kong, Copenhagen, Amsterdam<br \/>\nLocations to be determined &#8211; critical requirements are convenience and beer<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/campaigns.wikia.com\/wiki\/Local_Meetup_Schedule\">http:\/\/campaigns.wikia.com\/wiki\/Local_Meetup_Schedule<\/a><br \/>\nSpread to world via blogs and WOM<\/p>\n<p>Very interesting guy.
