Local business listings have been around for a number of years and developments that started in the early part of 2009 are what we are seeing now.
As search, social media and mobile converge, local business listings will be a significant development for the local business and the small business dependent upon the local consumer for their revenue.
What happened with Google sending the wrong information to the wrong businesses is part of the evolution and the maturity that will occur of this marketing tool. Certainly it is unfortunate that a company like Google does not have more quality controls to avoid this type of problems from happening in the first place.
One has to keep in mind this is only the of the iceberg. Already in progress are local business listing hijackings, which I think is a bigger problem than the reports.
Later this year we will see Adwords targeted to the local level; QR Codes; issues around consumer reviews on local listings; and lastly (for now) citations. I am sure as each of these come to market something will be a problem and we will have to work through it.
The industry is putting 100's of millions of dollars behind this marketing tool that will generate significant ad revenue. We will see this as a next wave for the next three years.

Hi David,

Local business listings have been around for a number of years and developments that started in the early part of 2009 are what we are seeing now.

As search, social media and mobile converge, local business listings will be a significant development for the local business and the small business dependent upon the local consumer for their revenue.

What happened with Google sending the wrong information to the wrong businesses is part of the evolution and the maturity that will occur of this marketing tool. Every time Google grabs for more data in new ways, the concern for situations like this, and worse - situations where true private personal information leaks out becomes greater.
Too many people toss such concern aside due to arrogance. And another major issue is how so many companies can get away with not disclosing most of the security breaches they encounter. Which just reinforces the false belief that most people have that such situations are rare.
People who use Google Wave are a great example of the potential level of exposure. This is not a good thing at all.

thanks for bringing this to our attention.
